Learn the satisfying art of needle felting in this fun and festive workshop! Erin of Grey Fox Felting will introduce you to the techniques and materials used in 3D needle felting, as you create your own cozy sweater bear. We'll go over how to build a basic form with wool, build separate pieces (such as ears) and attach them to the larger form, apply different layers of colored wool for details and patterning, as well as how to create clean edges and lines and finish/smooth the felted surface.
This workshop will take place virtually over a live Zoom session, but you may also purchase the class to complete at your own pace. The class will be recorded and made available anyone registered for the class as soon as the live session ends.
Upon purchasing the class, a Zoom link for the live session will be emailed to the address provided. If you have selected the Class & Supplies option, your materials kit will be mailed to you.
Below is the materials list, which you will receive in your supplies kit if you select for the Class Access & Materials Kit option:
- wool in project colors shown here
- #36 Spiral*, #38 Triangle, and #40 Triangle felting needles (*If using your own materials, a #36 Triangle will work as well)
- foam felting mat
Additional optional supplies you may wish to use:
- single needle felting handle for comfort (We carry these wood ones.)
- multi-needle felting tool for building up bulk of the form (For the scale of this project, we recommend a 3-needle tool like this one.)
- felting mat in material of your choice (We have these available in wool as well as foam.)
- finger guards (These protect your fingers from the needle when felting, and can be made of leather or silicone. We carry these leather ones.)
- scissors (Sometimes it can be handy to have scissors in case any areas need to be trimmed.)
Curious about how needle felting works? This satisfying process involves making repeated pokes into unspun wool fiber using a special barbed needle. When the needle goes into the wool, the microscopic scales on the fibers catch on the barbs and the fiber becomes tangled and matted together, forming felt. The more pokes you make in one area, the more felted and indented that section becomes. In this way, you can sculpt the wool and add additional colors and layers to build your form. It's an immediately satisfying and very forgiving medium to work in, and the possibilities are endless!
This workshop is beginner friendly and is recommended for ages 12+.
